Monash bio launched

By Sgt Sybelle Foxcroft

A biography of General Sir John Monash has been launched at the Australian War Memorial. The book titled Monash – The Outsider who Won a War details the rise of Gen Sir John Monash, who served with the Australian Army from 1887 to 1919, and reveals for the first time his relationships with those who would try to bring him down.

CDF Gen Peter Cosgrove attended the launch and said that it was an important record of a remarkable man and Australia’s finest-ever general.

“The biography of Gen Sir John Monash outlines a marvellous man who was a technical exponent of warfare and general without peer in our history,” he said.

“Monash was a man who commanded the Australian Corps in some of the most important and successful actions in that tumultuous last year of the war in 1918; in particular stopping the German offensive at Amiens and breeching the Hindenberg line in the final 100 days of battle.”

Author Roland Perry has published 17 books, several of them international bestsellers and in a variety of genres.

Mr Perry said Gen Sir John Monash could not be manipulated and was a key player in getting all Australian Divisions in one Corps on the western front.

“The amount of hurdles he had to overcome were massive and to achieve his aims in fighting the Germans is testimony to his strength of character.”
