Army squashed at the nationals

By Capt Ian Middleton

AIR Force squash players took out both men’s and women’s divisions at the ADF National Squash Carnival at RAAF Base Williamtown recently, despite a strong showing from Army.

The four-day championships attracted 57 entrants from around the country, vying for a place in the ADF squash team, soon to tour New Zealand.

Navy and Army played off to compete against the current title holders and Army managed to edge Navy out of contention.
Air Force held onto the title for a third straight year, with a comfortable win over Army in the final.

Sgt Darryl Bessell (Air Force) took out the Open Men’s and Mixed Masters division in a convincing display of skill and experience, while Sgt Madonna Doyle won the Women’s Open with equally impressive style.

The Team to tour New Zealand was announced at the presentation function, with only Army and Air Force players selected.

The team will tour New Zealand for 16 days in October and play test matches against the NZ Air Force.
