Sparks fly for 1 Bde

By Cpl Damian Shovell

FOUR Bushfires took place on Manbulloo pastoral lease in the Northern territory during Exercise Predators Gallop.

On the final day of the dry manoeuvre phase of the exercise the four fires started on the pastoral lease with 1 Tp ERS immediately dispatched to the area with five rural fire-fighting vehicles.

Three of the fires were contained, however, one fire continued to burn and developed into a substantial bush fire due to the dry nature of the vegetation.

The ERS, with advice and helicopter support from the Katherine office of National Parks and Wildlife and with engineer support form 1CER in building firebreaks, took several days to extinguish the fire.

Several New Zealand firefighters participating in the excercise also assisted in fighting the fire.
