Solomon
Islanders thank Australian soldiers
Locals
celebrate

THE
anniversary of RAMSI’s one year in the Solomon Islands was an
auspicious occasion for not only the troops and Participating
Police Force but also for the locals who were given their first
opportunity to openly thank RAMSI for their support.
The celebration began with a march through the streets of Honiara
by RAMSI personnel and locals.
The cheering crowds on the street and signs such as “Thank you
for your Help” and “Happy Anniversary RAMSI” was a sure indicator
of the gratitude the Solomon Islanders have for the hard work
done by personnel over the past year.
The march led to the Lawson Tama Stadium and the crowds were entertained
with traditional dancing and a march on the grounds.
The event was attended by Australia’s Minister of Defence, Senator
Robert Hill; CDF Gen Peter Cosgrove; Prime Minister of Solomon
Islands, Sir Allan Kemakeza; New Zealand Minister of Defence,
Mark Burton and Special Coordinator RAMSI, Nick Warner along with
various other dignitaries.
After the festivities a Military Contingent Anniversary Parade
was held at the Honiara International Airport.
With demonstrations from all five of the participating military
groups the ceremony brought in locals from all around to witness
the demonstrations.
