TWO children’s charities will reap the benefits from a Mount Isa car show next month, where drag car owner Sgt Neil Murphy, 3CER, will be the main draw card in a display of over 70 local cars and bikes.

The Carpentaria Buffalo Club of Mt Isa hopes to raise $10,000 for The Starlight Foundation and Montrose Access Children’s charities when the car show goes off on Father’s Day.

Sgt Murphy built the Super Charged Wild Bunch Ford Falcon himself, and said feature race meets in Brisbane, Towsnville and Mackay was one of his team’s regular activities.

“Getting the car out for charity events is just part of what we like to do,” he said.

“The car has run 8.02 at 175 mph over a 400-metre track, and that was on a soft tune up. And at $100 to start the car, $300 to do a run and about $1500 for a meet, the sport isn’t cheap.

But Sgt Murphy said that even without sponsors, the buzz he gets from a race meet in Brisbane or Sydney in front of 40,000 spectators helps to deal with the costs.
