FUNDING for the Cadet Initiated Activities program will be almost doubled this financial year.

Funding is being doubled from $260,000 to $500,000. More than 27,000 Australian Defence Force Cadets have the opportunity to submit bids for funding on behalf of their unit.

The funding will allow them to undertake activities that further their leadership and teambuilding skills. Cadets may also submit bids for training equipment that will benefit their unit.

Some of the bids submitted over the past couple of years include flight simulation software, kayaks and GPS equipment.

Examples of previous funding include:

  • TS Argonaut in Tasmania participated in a one-day sea survival course at the Australian Maritime College
  • 146 Army Cadet Unit in Bamaga, North Queensland, toured significant war sites and museums on Thursday Island
  • 710 Squadron in Western Australia undertook a personal development program, which involved abseiling and team building activities.

In the 2004 Budget, an additional $18 million over five years was allocated for Cadets above the Government’s existing commitments.
