Pte John Wellfare in East Timor
UNITS departing East Timor are doing their best to leave one last
legacy of Australian involvement in the fledgling island nation, as
was the case with the donation of volumes of medical texts to the
Dili Heath Training Centre recently.
Books no longer needed by HMAS Penguin were given to help the newly-established
centre find its feet, offering subject matter ranging from complex
diagnoses to surf life-saving.
Deputy for the Dili Health Training Centre, Anna Leita, said although
the texts were in English, at best a second language for all students,
they would ultimately help East Timorese.
East Timor [is] a new country and we need more support and help
from you all, she said.
Thank you for your support, our students need to learn many
things and these books [will] give us some help to help the Timorese
people.
Senior Environmental Health Officer for the PKF Lt Mark Tamblyn handed
over the books in a brief meeting with Ms Leita at the Health Training
Centre in Dili.
He said the books had been a gesture that he hoped would contribute
to saving lives in East Timor.
Books like this are expensive and there isnt a lot of
money in a place like this, he said.
Anything that we can give will be worth much more to these people
than it costs us.
I think its great to see the bond between medical professionals
in cases like this that people who have never met before can
be exchanging life-saving information. Thats what these people
do.
The Health Training Centre in Dili mostly educates hospital assistants
and medical practitioners.
