Awards
for the safe and their workplace
By
Louise Butcher
PEOPLE or organisations that go above and beyond in maintaining
safety in Defence may now be recognised for their efforts thanks
to the newly introduced Defence Safety Awards.
The awards are made under the guidance of the Defence Occupational
Health and Safety Committee (DOHSC).
The winner of the Leadership Award for Injury Prevention and Management
this year was Training Authority Submarines (TA-SM) represented
by Cmdr Stuart Wheeler.
Head DPE and Chair of the DOHSC RAdm Brian Adams presented Cmdr
Wheeler with a trophy for the submarine training schools efforts,
during a small ceremony held in Canberra in early June.
RAdm Adams noted that the school had also achieved the National
Safety Council of Australia five-star rating and is one of only
three organisations in Western Australia with that rating.
RAdm Adams also awarded a certificate of merit to Lt Genevieve Liebich,
2HSB, recognising her efforts relating to injury awareness and prevention
while deployed in East Timor.
Lt Liebich displayed a high level of professionalism and leadership
as the battalion physiotherapist, in conducting training sessions
to educate members on how injuries are caused and how to prevent
them from occurring and re-occurring. Lt Liebich often treated patients
in their workplace, allowing accelerated recovery and return to
work.
Entries for the 2005 safety awards will be called for shortly. For
more information contact Mike Barrett on (02) 6266 8517 or e-mail
