Defence top players touch off

By LS Rachel Irving

SIX members of the ADF Touch Football side are currently competing with the Australian team in Europe after a successful period in South Africa.

The team was selected following the Australian Touch Association National Championships played at Coff’s Harbour earlier this year, at which the ADF Touch Association (ADFTA) entered five teams.

The six ADF members who were selected in the Australian team left Sydney on June 19, and have completed 11 days in South Africa, conducting training camps for the under-privileged and competing against local teams.

The team then travelled to London for practice matches against local English sides and are now in the Channel Islands competing in the European Championships.

The current ADFTA President, Sub-Leut Joanne Adams, is the Australian Women’s Seniors Manager.

Flt-Sgt John Samin was selected to play in the Australian Men’s Senior side. Flt-Sgt Samin has played in an Australian side previously and is providing valuable guidance to those who have not yet had the experience.

The rest of the Defence players are:

  • Flt-Sgt Mick Lennon.
  • Flt-Sgt Jed Murray.
  • Paul Ridder.
  • LCpl Steve Hughes.
The “internationals” will return to Australia later this month and a full report on all the games will feature in an upcoming edition of Army.
