THE first shots by Australian soldiers deployed on Op Anode have been fired in the Solomon Islands during the opening of the new RAMSI range in Honiara.

Soldiers from 5/7RAR were the first to put rounds down range at the figure 11 targets.

The Combined Task Force has commenced weapons firing practices as part of an ongoing training program designed to ensure all members remain proficient in weapon handling.

Commander of the military contingent, Lt-Col John Hutcheson, said the range would be of great use to the soldiers deployed.

“Like any profession, to perform at optimal levels means that you need to train regularly,” he said.

“Regardless of what it is you do, if you don’t train then you’re not going to perform well when the time comes.”

The range has been established on private land north east of Henderson International Airport, in the vicinity of Tenaru Beach and is arguably one of the ADF’s most picturesque firing ranges.

Lt-Col Hutcheson said with the contingent staying as long as required it was important that training be undertaken in a variety of areas.

“Currently we are looking at a range of training options that include first aid and the operation of communications equipment.

“Our view is that by maintaining high standards we can better respond to requests from the PPF in their ongoing activities to restore law and order.”
