THE words “we will remember them” extend beyond the ode to the fallen.

They also act as a mission to those who remain to witness each new sunrise.

Ten years ago, in the middle of the Great Sandy Desert, long-range patrol vehicles from The Pilbara Regt crested a sand dune during a patrol of their AO.

Moments later, one vehicle rolled as the partially eroded sand dune gave way, with one of the soldiers, Sgt Tony Moriarty, being partially crushed as the vehicle rolled on top of him.

As the other members of the patrol desperately tried to rescue him, the hand of fate closed around him and Sgt Moriarty of D Tp, The Pilbara Regt, passed away.

It was decided to erect a memorial to Sgt Moriarty near the location of his death to coincide with the decade of his passing.

The members of The Pilbara Regt recently escorted family and friends of Sgt Moriarty to the remote accident location.

As the sun rose and lit the vast expanse of spinifex and sand, members of D Tp and 1 Sqn HQ conducted the service at the new memorial.

The memorial itself was simple in design, yet so effective in its message, and it served as a fitting tribute to a true bushman and a dedicated soldier.

For the family and friends of Sgt Moriarty the service was heartfelt and sincere.

For members of the Pilbara Regt it was proof of how their actions stand by their words.
