Cpl Melissa Perrin, 110 Sig Sqn fights against the weight of the Navy team

Sheer grit and determination

By Pte John Wellfare
ARMY'S Women refused to be upstaged by the men at the Australian Services Rugby Championships, defeating Navy to take away the ADF title.

Women's team coach Sgt Mark Fisher said the team put on a fast paced game that left Navy behind.

"[In the] first-half they were going very well," he said.

"The pick and drive was excellent and the backs were just tying it in, I couldn't be any prouder of how they were going.

"The second half was a little bit slower ... they didn't bring the intensity back into the game because I thought we had a downhill run.

"But to their credit they still kept the Navy scores and I thought their pick and drive was still good, their defence was excellent."

The score in the end was a clean win for Army 36-0.

Unfortunately, Air Force couldn't field a women's team for the championships, but players hoped to contest a truly inter-service competition next year.
