New SA head for reserves

A SOUTH Australian man who began his military career almost 40 years ago at Adelaide University has been appointed the ADF’s new reserves chief.

Maj-Gen Neil Wilson assumed the dual roles of Head of Reserve Policy and Assistant CDF (reserves) on April 1.

He replaced Maj-Gen Greg Garde, who retired on March 31, after three years in the position.

As Head of Reserve Policy, Maj-Gen Wilson advises CDF Gen Peter Cosgrove on policy matters that affect the Naval, Army and Air Force Reserves.

He said he was honoured by the appointment and was looking forward to further improving the effectiveness of the reserves.

“Reserves make up more than 42 per cent of the ADF and play a critical role in safeguarding Australia’s security,” he said.

“Enhancements over the past few years have made the reserves an even more important resource for the ADF.

“I’m looking forward to picking up on the good work that’s already been done and continuing to improve the availability and readiness of the reserve forces.”

Maj-Gen Wilson’s previous appointment was as Commander 2 Div.

In his civilian role, he is the Chief Technical Officer at Adelaide-based Agrilink International, where he coordinates the company’s research and development programs.
