This is a rare beast – it’s thinking American film It features a plot tha makes you think, and keep thinking.

The essence of the story is that people are more important than things. The families in a group of houses in a nice suburb share more than they realise.

The kids who grew up together have secrets that affect the rest of the families.

The mothers are strong, independent women, the fathers disappear to their jobs and the younger kids have unusual tendencies.

The film shows how people just getting on with their lives affect the lives of those around them different ways.

This really is an excellent, solidly pressive film, with some dark and funny moments.

Nuns never sent a chill down my spine I’ve always thought of them as kindly, gentle women who have given their lives to God.

My perception changed after watching The Magdalene Sisters.

The film is based on the true story of three girls ostracised by their families and shipped off to the Catholic church for retraining.

The supposedly immoral girls are forced to work in a monastery’s laundry service and live under strict, cruel rules.

The Magdalene Sisters is deeply saddening and probably reflective of the church at that time.

It’s worth a watch.

As there wasn’t too much propaganda about this one while it was being shown on film I greeted it with interest when the DVD came through the post, but my anticipation was short-lived.

The first 20 minutes bugged me. It was aimed at the lowest common denominator, with almost slap-stick, stereotyped prose.

It smacked of George Clooney.

There was nothing left to do but pick up the DVD box and check.

Yes, Clooney produced this ode to the thief.

It’s the story of a group of nutters who earn a living with petty thievery.

They botch everything they put their hands to and, when working as a group, cause more trouble than apart.

My recommendation is, don’t see it.

Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
