LAVARACK Barracks was the scene of the latest drug raid as part
of the Army's continued crackdown on illegal drug users.
25
military and Queensland police officials conducted the raids that
initially targeted 19 members of 3 Bde.
Commander
3 Bde Brig David Morrison said the soldiers were targeted after
authorities received allegations of illegal drug use within the
barracks.
"The
Army takes the misuse of drugs seriously because it affects the
safety and well being of our members," he said.
Brig
Morrison was quick to point out that those targeted only represent
a fraction of the brigade's personnel.
"These
raids should in no way demean or reflect on the outstanding work
done by the majority of soldiers within the units of the brigade."
Deputy
Provost Marshal-Army Maj Max Britton said MPs would continue to
gather intelligence relating to soldiers who use illegal drugs.
"Those
members who use illegal drugs will be subjected to investigation
and where appropriate either discipline or administrative action
will be instigated," he said.
He
said soldiers who use or are in possession of drugs, other than
cannabis, in Australia will also be referred to civilian police.
