How to stay safe travelling on leave

THE Defence Safety Management Authority (DSMA) is sponsoring a scheme to help ADF personnel travelling over the Christmas leave period.

Called the Highway Rest Stop Program, it has been established to alleviate driver fatigue.
Research shows that driver fatigue is a factor in up to 50 per cent of all vehicle accidents in Australia.

The program provides overnight transit accommodation in various establishments around Australia to both service and civilian Defence personnel and their families travelling over the Christmas/New Year leave break.

DSMA is sponsoring the accommodation component of the Highway Rest Stop Program for Defence members. But Defence personnel who are in receipt of travelling allowances are expected to utilise normal commercial accommodation and not occupy these limited rest stop facilities at Defence establishments.

Members wishing to take advantage of the program will need to adhere to Safebase-Bravo security requirements and will gain access to the Base on producing their Defence ID card and, in some instances, a second form of photo ID, eg, their driver's licence.

Specific access requirements at each base are listed on the DSMA website. Should the alert level increase, members will be required to comply with any additional security measures.

Details of booking procedures are available on the website, along with a list of participating establishments, costs, facilities available and points of contact.

In addition to overnight rest stops please remember to take a 10-minute break every two hours on your trips during the day.
