Looking
for adventure
By Capt Jamie Harper
MEMBERS of 11CSSB have been recently challenged with leadership,
courage, initiative and teamwork during their annual Adventurous
Training (AT) month.
The
adventurous activities varied in degree of difficulty and duration
and consisted of sea kayaking, white-water rafting, mountain climbing
and caving.
Locations
stretched as far north as Tully and Cairns, where one expedition
tackled the summit of Mt Bartle Frere, the highest mountain in Queensland.
Other
groups fought with the rapids of the great Tully River, went underground
in Greenvale to the depths of Dosey Caves and east into the Coral
Sea near the Family Island Group.
More
than 75 personnel were exposed to near-unattainable experiences
in keeping with the concept of adventurous training.
CO
11CSSB, Lt-Col Lyndon Anderson said AT gave the soldiers and officers
of the unit an opportunity to work on qualities such as leadership,
courage, initiative and teamwork.
"Many
soldiers had never participated in these sort of activities before
and were quite intimidated, however, they were able to develop strategies
to overcome initial fears and gain from the experiences," he
said.
"The
activities placed many reservists outside of their comfort zone
and really tested qualities such as courage and teamwork. The results
speak for themselves, with an improved level of self confidence
in many members and a higher level of teamwork throughout the unit."
He
also thanked all those associated with the AT and expressed particular
thanks to 4 Fd Regt, 5 Avn Regt, JLUNQ and 3CSSB.
