Exercise Crocodile 2003

A Fd Bty set record

By Pte John Wellfare
A Fd Bty has parachuted five 105mm howitzers into Kapyong DZ during Exercise Croc 03 - the most by the Sydney-based unit to date, according to Battery Captain, Capt Mick Foxall.

"The jump into Kapyong was spread over two days, we had two guns come in on the first day, three on the second," he said.

"The battery itself jumped into Kapyong DZ and were then air lifted across to the quarry up near Sabina Point where we married up with B Coy, 3RAR, who air mobiled in."

Capt Foxall said parachuting put additional stresses on both equipment and gunners, with weight restrictions forcing battery members to abandon even items that would be considered almost essential.

"The guys have been existing on light-scales, with what they've got on their pack and they manhandle the gun.

"We've got four guns and one command post, we left one gun on the drop zone and brought four forward."

Although during Croc 03 A Fd Bty were moved from where they landed to provide fire-support for troop landings at Sabina Point, the battery would typically support 3RAR's operations from the drop zone, receiving ammunition resupplies by parachute.
