Chapel turns 10

By Cpl Alisha Welch
THE Soldiers’ Chapel at Kapooka will reach its first milestone in November when its 10th anniversary will be celebrated by two major functions.

On November 1, at 2pm, a concert featuring AAB-Kapooka will be held in the Chapel foyer. The following day Sunday services will be conducted in the three adjoining chapels, after which a dedication of a plaque, in memory of Army chaplains, will take place.

Commandant ARTC, Col Richard Stanhope, said Kapooka had been a significant first point for soldiers since 1942.

“Every recruit entering the Army in the last 10 years has passed through the doors of the chapel, attending services and lectures in the complex,” he said.

In 1988 a proposal was submitted for the purpose-built chapel complex, which displayed enough flexibility to be used for worship, teaching and group-work as part of each recruit’s character training program.

The next year the Chief of the General Staff launched an appeal for $1.8 million to build a multi-denominational chapel complex through public donations.

The Soldiers’ Chapel was opened on October 31, 1993.
