Tax after return

By Jack Shore
Tax information for ADF families is now available online. ADF personnel and their families now have access to information on tax issues relevant to their employment in the ADF.

Recognising the need for further detail relating to ADF tax issues, the Defence Tax Management Office (DTMO) has compiled a tax guide to assist ADF members in preparing their income tax returns.

This guide provides information on assessable income, exempt income, allowable deductions and personal tax offsets.

The information can be accessed via www.defence.gov.au/cfo/tax

Also available is information of how to defer lodgement of tax returns because of members currently serving on active duty, and tax supplements on Bougainville and the Solomon Islands.

Other tax supplements that will soon become available will include Afghanistan, Iraq, Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The site also includes information on taxation implications of the change in nature of service in East Timor, and how it affects ADF members. This includes outlining the circumstances under which income will remain tax free.

The DTMO has established a tax hotline, where members can call 1800 806 053 between 8.30am to 5pm, for advice on taxation issues.

However, you should note that DTMO do not provide personal taxation advice.

Should you require advice on personal taxation matters, please contact your tax adviser.

Your feedback on the site is welcome and can be emailed to jack.shore@defence.gov.au
