ARMY fielded one of its smallest contingents ever in the recent ADF Squash Nationals held at RAAF Williamtown last month.

The reigning number one, WO2 Craig Simmich, was conspicuous by his absence, as RAAF and Navy players dominated in all events.

The only Army player to make the finals was WO1 Col Watego, going down in a hard-fought five game match to RAAF’s WOFF Dave Street in the Men’s B Grade event.

The Army Interservice Team consisted of Capt Peter Symes, WO1 Col Watego, Sgt Peter Magers, Pte Andrew Langan and Capt Steff Lacey. PO Helen Latham was seconded from Navy to fill the 2nd female slot.

Army unfortunately went down to Navy, which afforded the Navy team the opportunity to compete against the RAAF in the National Interservice Final.

The President of ADF Squash, Cmdr Ian Middleton wishes to further raise the profile of Squash as not being a sport for just the elite level player.

The annual National competition caters for players of all standards with players being graded according to their ability.

It would be fantastic to see an even stronger Army contingent at the 2004 Nationals, which will be held in RAAF Williamtown at the end of July next year. Army’s aim will be to win the National Interservice competition in 2004.

ADF Squash is planning an overseas tour in 2004, probably to New Zealand in the first two weeks of August 2004.

Nominations and expressions of interest are sought from interested (registered) ADF Squash Association players and officials wishing to be part of the tour.

Nominations are to be submitted to the Army Representative, Capt Steff Lacey, via e-mail Stephanie.Lacey@defence.gov.au by October 21, for consideration by the selection panel.
