Dog E-data saves Bodger

By Kaye Browne

Dogs are smart. Especially those lucky enough to be owned by someone in the services because in our experience they’re usually better trained than your average pet.

But we’ve yet to meet a dog that understands the words six-month deployment or field exercise – and that’s a pity because statistics show dogs are more likely to go missing when their boss is away.

That’s what happened to Bodger, a handsome Staffy who disappeared while his owner, a former paratrooper with 3RAR, was working despite being minded by a friend.

Desperate to find Bodger, Reuben Shaw joined the Dog-E-Data 24/7 Tag & Photo ID service, using its special lost dog poster feature to print out dozens of flyers.

You can join at the time that your dog goes missing, however, the success rate for finding dogs joined before getting lost is nearly 100 per cent as opposed to 40 per cent after the dog is missing.

300 posters and much door knocking later – a clue: “that photo looks like the new dog the neighbor’s got out back,” one man said. It was Bodger.

Although the occupant initially tried to claim the dog was a mate’s, he was persuaded of his mistake when Shaw showed him Bodger’s colour photo on the poster. Happily reunited, Shaw and Bodger went home.

As a measure of our respect and support for current service personnel – who often have to leave their dogs for long periods of time while serving Australia – Kaye & Brian, Dog-E-Data’s creators are offering free lifetime membership for your dog(s). (Normally $45 first dog.)

Simply go to www.dog-e-data.com.au/store/ and follow the links for ADF personnel.
