New doctrine for soldiers
It's Doctrine - Land Warfare Development Centre

The Army Doctrine hierarchy contains a series of capstone publications, which provide doctrine to support the employment of a range of capabilities across the modern battlespace.

LWD 1 – The Fundamentals of Land Warfare 2002, and LWD 2-0 – Intelligence 2001, were the first two of these published. Two further capstone publications are now close to issuing.

Because of the critical nature of combat service support doctrine, the Commandant ALTC made the decision to produce LWD 4-0 – Combat Service Support as a priority. Commander Training Command, Maj-Gen Ian Gordon, endorsed LWD 4-0 on June 19. The book is currently with the printers and should be available on ADEL and in hardcopy shortly.

As LWD 4-0 is subordinate to LWD 1, it was important that the philosophical doctrinal tenets of LWD 1 were distilled into LWD 4-0 – Combat Service Support. LWD 4-0 provides combat service support doctrine derived from fundamental warfighting concepts and is applicable to the sustainment of operations as described in LWD 1 and LWD
3-0 – Operations. LWD 4-0 provides a suitable foundation for the subsequent development of subordinate combat service support doctrine.

LWD 4-0 describes the nature and scope of effective combat service support to land operations and provides a doctrinal framework for the provision of combat service support at the operational and tactical levels. It describes and supports the doctrinal tenets of:
  • The manoeuvrist approach.
  • Combined arms operations.
  • Multinational operations.
  • Interoperability.
  • Multi-dimensional operations.

New concepts being developed in Joint Logistic Doctrine were also used to further develop this publication, while ensuring that strong linkages exist between Joint Logistic and Army combat service support doctrine. These linkages will further enhance the Army’s capability to provide effective combat service support to land operations.
The following publications have not previously been notified in this column and have been endorsed recently.

  • Marking of Hazardous Areas and Safe Routes (published as LWP-CA (Engr) 2-1-6).
  • Amendment 1 to MLW 2-7-3 40mm Grenade Launcher M79.
  • 12.7mm AW50F Anti-materiel Rifle (published as LWP-CA (DmtdCbt) 4-2-2).
  • Sniping (published as LWP-CA (DmtdCbt) 4-2-1).
  • Small Boats and outboard Motors (published as LWP-CA (Engr) 7-2-1).
  • Watermanship (published as LWP-CA (Engr) 2-4-1).
  • Combat Supplies Handbook (published as LWP-CSS 4-1-3).
  • Civil Military Cooperation (published as LWD 5-2).
