MPs on Iraqi streets

From Capt Andrew Bird in the Middle East
It’s late afternoon in Baghdad, peak hour traffic is at a standstill and the temperature is well into the 50s.

Just visible through the smog and traffic gridlock are soldiers from Sydney-based 1 MP Bn providing intermit close protection for the Australian Head Of Mission to Iraq.

Their convoy, consisting of ASLAVs from 2 Cav Regt and armoured civilian vehicles, weaves its way through the traffic congestion. Their concentration is intense – the six-lane freeway a scene of organised chaos.

The role the MPs play in the security detachment is a complex one. Their tasking is wide and varied and has required highly trained soldiers with specialist expertise to deal with a range of contingencies.

Before long, the MPs have the Australian Representative Office Staff back in a secure location, and begin to conduct reconnaissance for their next destination, the United Nations Headquarters Baghdad.

Observing the MPs working in a high-threat environment such as Baghdad, you get a real appreciation for the amount of training they require. They are always alert and aware of their surroundings and maintain a high standard of drills through constant practice – ready to act instantly.

While the MPs focus on the threat and the route ahead, they know full well their training and discipline to serve and protect is what can be counted on.
