Picture of the logistic tail

SCIENTISTS at DSTO are working on logistic systems for the Army of the future that not only prepare the battlespace for friendly forces but impact on the enemy as well.

One of the possible human elements is a logistics intelligence officer to sort and collate the automated information gathered from various sensors in and above the battlespace.

Staff Officer Military Discipline at DSTO’s Land Operations Division Brendon Sammut said DSTO was trying to get ahead of the game by preparing for emerging technology.

“We’re looking at software that can analyse entities identified through sensors like the AEW&C platform within the structure of the digital battlespace and interpret their behaviour,” he said.

“At the end of the day we’ll still need that human operator to confirm data but we want to automate as much of the process leading up to eyes-on as we can.”

Data patterns that could be automatically analysed include vehicle types, regular movement routes and patterns of behaviour, such as convoy actions and order of march.
