Go Green – Army ready to win
Final squad to be chosen for interservice carnival

By Cpl Jonathan Garland
THE green team is looking forward to the ADF national Interservice Rugby Carnival in Sydney from June 8 to 14, according to Army Rugby Co-ordinator Capt Robert Shearman.

“The team is looking good. We’ve conducted several development camps in NSW, Queensland, Victoria and NT and selected players for the male and female squads to go into the carnival,” he said.

“We’ve also rolled out our Smart Rugby program, a program the ARU had developed to promote safe rugby within the code.”

Key players include Musn Ricky Dumigan, ARTC, and LCpl Paul Yates, 5/6RVR, who are veterans of the recent tour to South Africa.

Another linchpin is Sgt Tomas Navusolo, 6RAR, who recently travelled to Fiji to try out for their national side.

“He had the support of his CO, plus financial support from Australian Service Rugby and Army Rugby, to get to the trials.

“Having an international player of that calibre involved in Army rugby is a big coup for us.”

The squads will be finalised on June 5 to determine those players going forward into the carnival.

The carnival will culminate on June 14 at North Sydney Oval with a major showdown between the Army and the Navy at 1.30pm.

The Army vs Navy female match takes place on the same day at 11.30am.

The matches are open to the general public and will be supported by activities such as a fast roping demonstration from a Sea King helicopter, a guard of honour and APCs from 1/15RNSWL.

  • Army Rugby has recently created a web site as a resource for service players, which can be located at www.armyrugby.org.au
