Army power at annual V8 challenge

By Capt Sandra Turner
AS WELL as the V8 power on the roads, patrons of the annual Clipsal 500 V8 Challenge also witnessed power of a different kind – displays by some of the ADF’s best, including the Red Berets, the RAAF Roulettes and the might of the Hornets from RAAF Edinburgh’s Aircraft Research and Development Unit.

On the ground, a large static display of Army equipment was available for patrons to view and experience first hand and a large number of ADF personnel were available throughout the four days to answer questions and provide working demonstrations.

This year, the static display was again held on one of the main ovals within the street circuit, aptly named ‘Defence Oval’ for the duration of the four-day meeting.

Personnel from 9 Bde units and the RAAF’s No. 1 Airfield Defence Sqn were on hand to explain equipment and many had the opportunity to provide information for those interested in jobs in both the part-time and full-time forces.

OC 9 Bde Recruiting and Retention Cell Maj David Edmonds said there was a lot of interest in all aspects of the displays and more than 200 potential recruits enquired about joining the ADF.

“We have had a very positive response to the Defence displays this year,” he said.

“In the current international climate, there is an increased awareness and interest in the assets of the ADF and all displays were well attended throughout the four-day event.

“Many patrons have expressed their support of our troops overseas and have been encouraged to personally pass this support on to those serving in the Middle East using the Defence e-mail address set up for this purpose.”
