2RAR leaves for Baghdad

By Capt Thomas Tilbrook
A PLATOON from 2RAR departed RAAF Base Townsville bound for Baghdad on May 11, tasked with the security of the Australian Embassy and the Australian diplomatic representatives in country.

A large number of friends and family were present to farewell members of the 5 Pl, B Coy, contingent and emotions were running high as members departed with plenty of tears and heartfelt embraces.

In addition to the rifle platoon, there were also comms specialists from 3CSR and combat engineers from 3CER.

3 Bde Commander Brig Dave Morrison farewelled the troops along with CO 2 RAR, Lt-Col John Frewen and RSM 2RAR, WO1 Steve Doyle.

The recent departure follows the advance party, which deployed last week and aligned with the deployment of members of 2 Cav Regt who departed from Darwin.

All elements of the deployment will marry up prior to the commencement of the task. The task is expected to run for at least four months.
