THE unique capabilities of 2 Cav Regt have been added to Australia’s force deployed to Iraq.

Three ASLAVs and associated personnel from 1 Bde’s 2 Cav Regt will soon join an ADF security force tasked to protect Australia’s Representative Mission in Baghdad.

The force will be in place by mid-May and will relieve an interim security force provided by the commando task group, which is now deployed in Baghdad.

The ASLAV, deploys with world’s best night-fighting capability, will provide the the new security force with substantial mobility, protection, firepower and communication assets.

CO 2 Cav Regt Lt-Col Tony Luke said the regiment welcomed the opportunity for any of its elements to deploy on operations.

“Our people are highly trained and professional and the ASLAV can undertake a wide range of combat operations,” he said.

“I am proud of the soldiers who are going.

“The highest standard will be expected from these men and I am sure they will deliver.

“It was with some professional envy the remainder of the unit farewelled those who deployed. All the men in the regiment are keen for their opportunity.

“At these times, however, the families left behind must be in our thoughts. We are committed to making this separation as easy for the families and loved ones as we can.”

The ASLAVs deployed to the MEAO on the giant Antonov Strategic Lift aircraft from RAAF Darwin.

The deployment, at short notice and over thousands of kilometres, demonstrated the readiness and deployability of 1 Bde’s ASLAVs.
