Medics come together
By Cpl Jonathan Garland

MEMBERS of the Australian resuscitation team have recently moved to the AUSBATT battalion group rear (BGR) after several months operating alongside Thai medics at the UN Hospital in Dili.

Operating from a compound on the outskirts of Dili, the medical team retains a resuscitation capability but now operate mainly in an RAP role.

Medical Officer Capt Helene Cass said reinforcing the resuscitation capability at the UN hospital had been a terrific experience.

“There was nothing there when the Thais began operations and we were able to help out while they established facilities at the hospital,” she said.

“They are now well established and have had a new rotation come in, so they’re running two resuscitation teams of their own and no longer need our assistance.”

Capt Cass said, with the UN hospital only 10 minutes away, there was no need for the Australians to continue to operate as a resuscitation team.

“If there was a serious case it would make much more sense to take the casualty straight there, because any delay in bringing them here would actually be detrimental.”
