AN ARMY sergeant recently graduated from ADFA with a Masters Degree and the Defence Studies Prize, proving that ADFA is not just for officers.

Sgt Blair Tidey, Australian Intelligence Corps, graduated from ADFA in December last year with a Master of Defence Studies degree after four years of part-time study.

He was awarded the Defence Studies Prize after achieving the highest academic record for the Master of Defence Studies program for 2002.

Sgt Tidey, who completed a Bachelor’s degree before joining the Army, hoped his success would encourage other NCOs to study at ADFA.

“The postgraduate programs are open to everyone, military and civilian,” he said.

“Much like mature age students in civilian universities, options such as the graduate certificate also allow prospective students without an existing degree to have relevant professional qualifications or significant work experience counted for entry.”

He said studying for a postgraduate degree at ADFA has several advantages for full-time ADF members.
“There are no fees, the degree can be completed part-time while working and lecturers are used to dealing with military personnel.

“There is also a distance education option available for members not posted to Canberra.”
