News In Brief

Bridge work
THE Army is to receive a new bridging capacity with the awarding of a contract for 24 bridging boats to Birdon Marine of Port Macquarie.

The $13.95 million contract would provide a capability not available since the retirement of the Bailey Bridge in the mid-1980s.

The new boats will replace the current ageing fleet of bridging boats, which have been in-service for more than 30 years.

The boats will work in conjunction with the Army’s Floating Support Bridge system and will be operated by RAE soldiers who have a primary task of constructing various bridging systems.

The boats will be operated by sappers from the Combat Engineer Regiments in Darwin, Townsville and Brisbane, with some boats located at the School of Military Engineering for training purposes.

DRN blocks files
THREATS to the Defence Information Environment (DIE) have led to the blocking of certain types of file from the gateway to the Defence Restricted Network.

Types include those with extensions bat, com, dll, exe, java, js, pif, scr, vbs and vbx.

Administrators who need to download software patches should contact the service centre.

Other Defence users are to contact Local Information Technology staff before any of these file types are introduced into the DIE.
