Holsworthy refurbished

By Pte John Wellfare

SOLDIERS based at Holsworthy Barracks in Sydney will soon be moving into newly refurbished accommodation following an allocation of $11.6 million to improve living conditions.

The barracks is home to some of the Army’s most deployable, high-readiness units, including the newly established TAG East.

Work on the aging facilities began in March this year with a focus on improving the quality of soldier’s individual rooms, heating and cooling systems and ablutions.

While the budget did not allow for complete rebuilding of facilities, major refurbishment of living areas is taking place with the aim of improving the comfort and cleanliness of the existing structures.

A SYDNEY web-based radio station is providing a weekly forum for Australian soldiers and their families deployed the world over to see and hear music video and contribute to discussion.
Working out of the same building as the famous Basement Nightclub, thebasement.com.au, runs a three-hour weekly program called The Mess on Fridays from 10am to 1pm Australian Eastern Standard Time.
Host Cleo Glyde features guests, interviews, requests, a chat room and a message board for people all over the globe.

With new carpet, furnishings and paintwork included in the upgrade, living-in members will no longer be forced to inhabit substandard accommodations.

One of the upgrade’s most important inclusions is the installation of telephone facilities, where soldiers living at Holsworthy Barracks have previously had to rely on mobile and public phones.

Also included in the package is the much-needed remodeling of ablutions, which have suffered gross deterioration over the past few years.

Work on the 24 three-storey accommodation blocks is expected to finish in November and should extend the life-expectancy of facilities.

In the meantime, the majority of soldiers posted to Holsworthy are receiving Rental Assistance.
