Riding
for charity

THE ADF is well-known for participating in community events, especially
when it comes to raising money for charity.
On a calm, but wet, morning four members from the Ground Based
Air Defence (GBAD) and Radar SPO ventured out on their bicycles
to take part in the Great Melbourne Bike Ride.
The aim of the ride was twofold, firstly to raise money for Variety
– The Children’s Charity and, secondly, to break the
world record for the largest cycling event ever held.
Approximately 14,000 riders participated in the event, however,
it still fell short of the world record. The ride started in the
centre of the city and took riders through Moonee Ponds in the
north west, Flemington Racecourse, Williamstown and then back
to cultural Lygon Street in the inner-city suburb of Carlton.
Although it was only a short ride of 45km, the highlight of the
day was definitely crossing the Westgate Bridge.
Pausing at the top of the bridge was a must so riders could fully
appreciate the fine view of the great city of Melbourne.
The dreaded tram tracks claimed a number of riders and even one
member from GBADR SPO fell victim to this Melbourne curse.
All in all it was a fine day for a ride and cyclists of all abilities
were out there to give it a go.
