Golden girl Sophie

IN THE biggest event of her athletics career, Pte Sophie Joynes has represented the Northern Territory at the Australian National Track and Field Championships in Brisbane, capping off an excellent season by achieving personal bests in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m races.

Pte Joynes, from 1CSSB at Roberston Barracks, placed 7th in her 800m heat, recording 2min 16.47sec and set her personal best race time over the distance.

In a busy program she backed up from the 800m to again achieve a new ADF record, running 4min 42.86sec in the 1500m.
To complete her program, Sophie followed this up in the 3000m with another personal best and ADF record, this time stopping the clock at 10min 16.09sec to finish in fifth place.

President of the ADF Running and Athletics Association Capt Frank Kresse said, at 22 years of age, Sophie is well placed to develop further and the experience gained at this her first Nationals can only add to her confidence and confirms her ability on the national stage.

“She has indeed done herself and the ADF proud,” he said.
Sophie’s next major series of races is at the Arafura Games in Darwin in May 2003.
