No signals – posting orders go digital

By Lt-Col David Tyler
Army’s posting order system has moved into the 21st century with all posting orders now available on the Defweb rather than being distributed by routine signals that may take some time to reach their addressees.

The rollout of the PMKeyS personnel management database has provided an opportunity to vastly improve the distribution of posting orders.

All officer and soldier postings, including those of reserve members, are now published on the Defweb every Friday and remain on the web site until they take effect.

The acting Director-General of Personnel-Army, Col Mick Slater, said everyone who had access to the Defweb would have much greater visibility of postings and would be able to search using several criteria, including corps, trade, and rank.

“Anything that makes personnel management more accessible to members is a positive initiative,” he said.

The only time posting orders will be sent using the old signal system will be for some remote and overseas localities, and where increased security was required, such as for Special Forces members.

“We recognise that not every member has ready access to the DEFWEB, so admin units will still need to provide members with posting order print-outs to make sure the information is promulgated efficiently.”

The Army’s adoption of the new method of distributing posting orders has been trialed since November, and follows a similar system introduced successfully by Air Force early last year.
