Starting the chase – two competitors fight it out in the cycle leg of the Short Course Triathlon in Sydney on March 1.

First leg over – two competitors scramble out of the lake and head for their bikes to begin the 20km cycle race.

The lake at the International Regatta Centre in Penrith is turned to white wash as competitors fight to take the lead in the 500m swim that started the Short Course Triathlon.

ADF triathletes invade Sydney

THE Tenix Short Course Triathlon Championship was conducted on March 1 at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith.

The event consisted of a 500m swim, 20km cycle and 5km run and attracted a total of 99 competitors. The race started with 39 individuals and 20 teams.

The stronger swimmers quickly made their way to the front with Sig Dan Parker, Defence School of Sigs, coming out of the water in a super fast time of 7min 44sec with a lead of 9sec.

The first female was Pte Sophie Joynes, 1CSSB, in 8min 25sec.

The competitors quickly made their way to the transition area and headed off on the 20km cycle leg.

The fastest bike leg of the day was recorded by Team 3HO537 (RAAF) in 33min 13sec with an average of 37.2kph.

The fastest male was Leut-Cmdr Doug Griffiths, HMAS Hawkesbury, who completed the leg in 33min 16sec, with the fastest female being Pte Joynes in a time of 36min 44sec.

Going into the run leg only seconds separated the teams and individuals and the strongest runner took control of the race.

The final results were:

  • First male – Pte Daniel Caraghin, 41RNSWR, in 1hr 0min 28sec.
  • First female – Pte Joynes in 1hr 3min 36sec and eighth overall.
  • Second male – Leut-Cmdr Griffiths in 1hr 2min 13sec.
  • Second female – Pte Davidson in 1hr 19min 2sec.
  • Third male – Mr Whiteman (Defence Civilian), DNSDC, in 1hr 3min 49sec.
  • Third female – Maj Andrea Davey, AAB Kapooka, in 1hr 25min 40sec.
  • First All-Male Team went to 17 Const Sqn in 1hr 1min 12sec.
  • First All Female Team went to the Bandies from AAB Sydney in 1hr 10min 55sec.
  • First Mixed Team went to the Low Level Flyers in 1hr 1min 26sec.
  • First Team Age Greater than 105 went to the Richmond Bombers from RAAF Richmond in 1hr 4min 10sec.
  • The encouragement award went to Smn Dave Bunker from HMAS Hawkesbury.
