CA
calls on Army to remember those who have given their lives
By
Cpl Alisha Carr
STORMY weather and gusty winds didnt hinder the spirits of
the small gathering of people who ventured out to celebrate the
Armys 102nd birthday at a parade in Canberra on February 28.
Celebrated
one day earlier than our actual birthday on March 1, CA Lt-Gen Peter
Leahy said the Armys birthday was a time for all Australians
to reflect on the dedicated service of its men and women
past and present.
On
the Armys anniversary it is important that we remember those
who have given their lives in the service of their country,
he said.
It
is also timely to acknowledge the work currently being done by the
Australian Army at home and abroad, particularly in peacekeeping
missions and humanitarian operations.
Its
a day when we can look to the future knowing that Australia has
a modern, capable and professional Army, which is also an integral
part of the community and our heritage as a nation.
We
live in anxious times. Never in my experience has the Australian
Army faced such an intense operational tempo on so many fronts simultaneously.
He
said the Army has established itself a proud reputation for professionalism,
for courage, for fairness and for compassion.
In
the two years since our centenary, the Army has added to its reputation
in the war against terror in Afganhistan and currently members of
the Army are on operations in places as far afield as the Balkans,
the Middle East, Africa, East Timor, Bougainville and the Solomon
Islands.
In
the Middle East we are part of a coalition of forces seeking to
prevent war, terror and tyranny.
We
are seeking to ensure that our forces are properly prepared should
they be called to arms.
Happy
birthday.
