Maj-Gen
Ronald Hughes (Rtd) passed away in Canberra on Sunday February 2,
2003.
Maj-Gen
Hughes had a long and distinguished military career that began when
he graduated from RMC in 1939.
Throughout
his career he served in Borneo, Korea, Vietnam and on a number of
international postings including the United Kingdom and Indonesia.
Maj-Gen
Hughes was a professional soldier who always gave his best and displayed
the qualities of integrity, loyalty, teamwork and self-discipline.
This
was validated when on his retirement in 1977, he was presented with
a plaque on which was mounted a pair of army boots. The inscription
read, Presented to the General who always had his feet on
the ground.
Throughout
his career Maj-Gen Hughes remained a dedicated family man.
He
married Joan in 1947 and they became the proud parents of three
sons, Alan, David and Geoffrey.
After
his retirement Maj-Gen Hughes and his wife became gardening and
caravan enthusiasts, spending part of their retirement travelling
around Australia avoiding the Canberra winters.
He
undertook volunteer work, assisting a number of organisations including
the RSL, Red Cross and ACT Emergency Services.
The
distinguished career of Maj-Gen Ronald Hughes will forever be remembered
through military historical records and remaining family members.
A service
of thanksgiving was held at the Anzac Memorial Chapel of St Paul
at Duntroon on February 7, 2003.
