Maj-Gen Ronald Hughes

A general who kept his feet on the ground

- Maj-Gen Ronald Hughes -

Maj-Gen Ronald Hughes (Rtd) passed away in Canberra on Sunday February 2, 2003.

Maj-Gen Hughes had a long and distinguished military career that began when he graduated from RMC in 1939.

Throughout his career he served in Borneo, Korea, Vietnam and on a number of international postings including the United Kingdom and Indonesia.

Maj-Gen Hughes was a professional soldier who always gave his best and displayed the qualities of integrity, loyalty, teamwork and self-discipline.

This was validated when on his retirement in 1977, he was presented with a plaque on which was mounted a pair of army boots. The inscription read, “Presented to the General who always had his feet on the ground.”

Throughout his career Maj-Gen Hughes remained a dedicated family man.

He married Joan in 1947 and they became the proud parents of three sons, Alan, David and Geoffrey.

After his retirement Maj-Gen Hughes and his wife became gardening and caravan enthusiasts, spending part of their retirement travelling around Australia avoiding the Canberra winters.

He undertook volunteer work, assisting a number of organisations including the RSL, Red Cross and ACT Emergency Services.

The distinguished career of Maj-Gen Ronald Hughes will forever be remembered through military historical records and remaining family members.

A service of thanksgiving was held at the Anzac Memorial Chapel of St Paul at Duntroon on February 7, 2003.
