Highway cycle adventure

HEAD out on the highway looking for adventure in the name of a good cause – that’s the aim of Maj Matthew Kitchin.

He is about to embark on a 600km journey over nine days in the annual NSW Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) Big Ride beginning on March 15.

Maj Kitchin hopes to raise more than $5000 for the Multiple Schlerosis (MS) Society.

“My aunt has MS, so I have seen first-hand the effects of the disease – by completing this event I feel that I can personally do something for a very worthwhile charity,” he said.

Usually behind a desk in Capability Systems Division in ADF HQ, Maj Kitchin has had to commit himself to a rigorous fitness-training schedule, cycling more than 60km a day.

“My training is targeted not just at fitness and endurance but also conditioning. Ultimately there is little difference between 30km and 100km – I still need to finish a day’s riding, get some sleep and get back on the bike the next day.”

This annual cycle touring event has raised more than $2 million dollars for charity since it began in 1991.
