Central NSW blitz Kapooka 10s

INTENSE competition saw the 10th Annual Defcredit Kapooka 10s Rugby Union Knockout one of the most action-packed events held so far this year.

Twenty-two teams – 21 of those being from the Army – fought it out at the Home of the Soldier on February 22 in tough conditions.

The Border Army Rugby Club from Albury-Wodonga fielded two teams, as did the Riverina Army Rugby Club – the host club.

1 Avn Regt, 6RAR, 17 Const Sqn, School of Military Engineering, a combined side from 4RAR(Cdo) and 3RAR (the ‘CEGS’), 25/49RQR, RMC, 2/14LHR, Australia’s Federation Guard, 5 Avn Regt, A Fd Bty, a combined side from 21 Const Regt and 2CER, a combined side from 145 Sig Sqn and 9FSB, HMAS Cerberus and a team from the School of Infantry in Singleton participated in the competiton.

With players anxious to take to the field, teams originating from central NSW proved too strong.

In the Bowl Grand Final, the Riverina Army Rugby Club Team Two thrashed 5 Avn Regt by 24 points with the latter failing to score.

In the Plate Grand Final the Border Army Rugby Club Team One were too good for 17 Const Sqn, beating them 17-12.

The Cup Grand Final saw 9FSB and the Riverina Army Rugby Club Team One fight it out in a tough battle, where the team from Riverina were victorious 17-5.

Lt Raefe Kirk-Lauritsen, event organiser, said all participants seemed to enjoy the competition.

“It’s a great start to the year,” he said.

“With so many teams from the Army getting involved, it’s a good sign that Rugby Union is still strong in the ranks.”
