Call for all Army AFL players

By Cpl Alisha Carr
THE Army is the leading force in ADF Aussie Rules and will continue its 17 years of dominance at the Services Australian Football Association Carnival, according to Army team coach Sgt Andrew Potter.

This year the carnival will be held in Canberra over the period March 24-28, in the form of a round-robin competition, with each service being allowed a maximum of 30 players.

Sgt Potter said for the Army to maintain dominance, the best possible team was required.

“Due to the carnival being played early in the year and financial constraints, a selection tour this year is limited,” he said.

“I don’t want people to miss out just because a selection tour wasn’t conducted – if anyone feels they are up to it, regardless of whether they have played before, they should give me a call.”

Once the team is finalised, training will be conducted at Randwick Barracks in Sydney, from March 19-23.

“We are expecting the opposition to have made a huge improvement.

“I believe our past dominance is because of the Army’s overall discipline and the ideals that are instilled in us as soldiers.

“We bring that onto the football field as well. We’re always disciplined and we can stick to our game plan – we know the rules and we know the job that has to be done.”

The Jim Smail Cup was first won by the Navy in 1986 and aside from a three year period when it was uncontested, the Army has won every year since.

“I first coached in 1995 in Adelaide and would hate to be the first coach to lose!”
