THE Caduceus Cup, the highlight of the Royal Australian Corps
of Signals Corps Week, was held at Borneo Barracks, Cabarlah,
last month.
Located
just outside Toowoomba Queensland, it is the home of the 7 Sig
Regt and Joint Telecommunications School.
Held
annually, the cup is a 108km relay race, consisting of 10 runners
per team.
Each
runner competes three 3.6km legs of the gruelling Cabarlah track.
Certainly a change to the past when teams dodged trucks and cars
along the highway between Cabarlah and Enoggera. This year the
corps spirit was proven to be strong with 13 units from
all around Australia arriving to compete.
The
race kicked off at 5.30am and 136 Sig Sqn broke away to an early
lead.
There
were some outstanding individual performances throughout the day,
most notably Lt Chris Keogh, 1CSR, running a 11min 48 sec.
As
the day wore on, 7 Sig Regt established a commanding lead and
won the event in six hours, 58 minutes.
The
battle for second place was close with the 103 Sig Sqn and last
years winners, 1CSR, fighting to the end. 103 kicked away
and finished in seven hours, seven minutes 1min 44sec ahead
of 1CSR. As the first minor unit across the line, 103 Sig Sqn
also claimed the Colonel Commandants Trophy.
In
other events (all held over 72km), 7 Sig Regt proved to be strong
and took out the Athena Trophy and the Grecian Trophy.
The
Reserve Shield was won by the 108 Sig Sqn, which was the only
Reserve unit to compete. The unit ran the full 108km and finished
11th.
