Cav secures holy grail
By
Cpl Luke Anderson
THE holy grail of armoured corps rugby union, the Adjutants
Cup, has gone full circle by returning to the 2 Cav Regt in Darwin
after 12 years absence.
This
annual tournament of all armoured corps rugby teams encompassed
a gruelling four games in five days and on conclusion 2 Cav Regt
emerged not only victorious but undefeated as well.
This
was no indication of a one-sided affair, with strong aggressive
performances from B Sqn 3/4 Cav Regt and 1 Armd Regt.
While
hosts 2/14LHR (QMI) showed fight, it was the Barbarians who were
renowned for their spirited performance.
Much
preparation went into the victories for 2 Cav Regt with behind-the-scenes
coaching, training and motivation from Capt Drew Horsell, WO2
David Ruff, Sgt Paul Hunton and Cpl Tony Taylor.
While
the tournament showed a good all round performance from all members,
the tour was highlighted by strong showings in the forwards. Cpl
Andersen, Cpl Nuske, Cpl Morton, Capt Brocklehurst and Tpr Fraser
stood out, while the elusive backs in the form of Pte Jones and
Tpr Yow led the way for 2 Cav Regt.
First-time
additions to the side showed good strength and promise for the
years ahead including Tpr Higgins, Tpr Southwick and Tpr Tattersall
who was also awarded the Bendigo Bank Player of the Tournament.
The
competition demonstrated a high standard of rugby and all those
involved will be looking forward to next years tournament
in the heat of Darwin.
