Penguin is a winner

By PO Peter Swift
RUNNERS from Sydney, Newcastle, Richmond, Holsworthy, Albatross and Canberra and including Navy, Army, Air Force, Defence civilians, Sydney Harbour Trust and the NSW Emergency Services competed in the HMAS Penguin Gate-to-Gate Fun Run last month.

The 165 entrants celebrated not only the 24th running of the Gate-to-Gate event but also the 60th anniversary of HMAS Penguin.

Runners took on the 5km picturesque course around Chowder Bay and Georges Heights and saw some competitors take the fancy dress option, with a lot of people in weird and wonderful costumes, making for a colourful crowd.

CO HMAS Penguin Cmdr John Shevlin not only started the event but competed as well.

Competitors jostled for position on the start line, while the rest of the social competitors were laughing and making jokes just behind the fleet-footed gallopers, all a little nervous of what lay ahead.

To the side, WO Ian Sutton (race referee) prepared his experienced crew, which consisted of Sydney-based Navy PTIs and volunteers from Penguin who officiated at this prestigious event, the second oldest foot race in the ADF.

All enjoyed the first 1.5km along Chowder Bay Road with views of Sydney Harbour but the mood changed quickly when competitors started to ascend the infamous stairs.

The heat played heavily on competitors as they proceeded past the water stop, around the Georges Heights section, then onto Middle Head Road, down the hill and back into Penguin.

The first to pass by officials, to conclude the last 500m, down to the lower section of Penguin and then back to the finish line, were soldiers from 4RAR (Cdo), Holsworthy.

The front-runners had taken only 15 minutes to complete the 5km course, with first person across the finish line being Sgt Rob Combe, 4RAR(Cdo).

Within 50 minutes, the last competitor finished, with everyone enjoying a barbecue and refreshments while relaxing around the Penguin pool.

Cmdr Shevlin presented trophies and commemorative penguins to winners of the individual categories.

Organisers would like to thank Cmdr Shevlin for providing facilities and support to host the event, Penguin personnel who assisted as officials or marshals, all Navy PTIs from the Sydney area for their expert assistance and the PT staff HMAS Penguin who organised the event.

Also, thanks to all competitors who took the time to compete.
