Security at right level

IN LIGHT of the recent non-specific and generalised terrorist threat against Australia, the ADF has reviewed the SAFEBASE protective alert status.

Secretary of Defence Rick Smith and CDF Gen Peter Cosgrove determined recently that the current heightened security measures and the extra vigilance adopted since September 11 were an appropriate level of protection to Defence people and assets.

They have, however, asked all base commanders to ensure appropriate measures are in place to move to higher levels of alert if necessary.

Gen Cosgrove said all base commanders were to review the measures they had in place to ensure that they were in accordance with the SAFEBASE Bravo alert level.

“If you are responsible for implementing measures at your base or establishment and have any questions about the SAFEBASE policy, you should seek advice from your DSA State/Territory office,” he said.

“The DSA central office is looking closely at our SAFEBASE policy to identify areas that might require further refinement or clarification.”
