Team seeks master players

THE call has gone out to members posted to Puckapunyal in 2003 to join the fledgling local team participating in the Victorian Country Masters Australian Football (MAF) in a combined Seymour/Pucka/Bendigo side.

Formerly called Superules, Masters Australian Football is open to players 35 years and over who enjoy their footy and keep playing in a non-competitive environment.

Rules are modified to protect players and reduce injury. Although in its infancy in the Puckapunyal area, MAF has been played around Australia since 1980 with nine member state associations and played by more than 115 teams throughout Australia.

At this stage games will be played monthly on Sunday afternoons against other teams around country Victoria.

The opportunity exists to represent at the national carnival held annually.

WO2 Kim Beasland has competed at five national carnivals and is an avid supporter of the MAF concept.

“It is not only an opportunity to have a kick against blokes your own age but see a bit of Victoria as well,” he said.

Recently two players based in Puckapunyal competed in the Masters National Carnival in Melbourne representing Victorian Country and enjoyed the opportunity to mix with the players from all over Australia. Even some old AFL players have a go.

South Australia was captain/coached by ex-Hawthorn legend John Platten.

The MAF motto is ‘footy for fun’ and the emphasis is on family involvement and fun social interaction.
