As
the nation mourns those who have died in the Bali bombings, we should
also take pride in the contribution soldiers have made in rapid
response to this tragedy.
Army
has provided medical personnel, technicians, chaplains and psychiatric
support as well as linguists, drivers and support staff as part
of Operation Bali Assist. Many more are helping, including those
from the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, in whatever way they can.
These
soldiers have done Army and the nation proud throughout this tragedy.
They are all making a distinct difference. Their willingness to
lend a hand and to help a mate typifies the spirit of the Aussie
digger and the ethos of the Australian Army.
In
the coming weeks, more may be asked of Army and we will respond
as we have always done quickly, confidently and with determination
and resolve.
I urge
you all to do what you can in this period of our nations need.
Our
thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones in
this vicious and cowardly attack. I wish those members of the Army
who have been injured a speedy recovery and a safe return home.
Over
the past 101 years, the Australian Army has risen to meet many challenges
and has done so again this time.
I ask
all soldiers to continue to work hard and maintain our readiness
for whatever lies ahead.
Our
efforts over the past few years have been significant. We have established
the Incident Response Regiment and a second Tactical Assault Group
to enhance Australias existing capacity to respond to national
security threats.
I am
confident that the Australian Army stands ready to respond to all
tasks we are assigned in protecting Australias national interests.
