PREPARATIONS
for the 18th annual ADF National Golf Championships (ADFGA) to be
hosted in Canberra from December 9 to 13, are well under way.
Nationals
Tournament Director Sqn-Ldr Trevor Owens said the new format trialled
in 2001 had been a great success and was welcomed by members.
The
committee has worked hard for many years at refining and finetuning
this tournament and we are very happy with where we are at in terms
of providing an excellent tournament for our membership, he
said.
I
am especially proud that the ADFGA offers a tournament that is not
equalled anywhere in the corporate world in terms of the low entry
fee, the quality of the venue at Federal Golf Club, the prizes offered
and the overall atmosphere of what is truly a great amateur event.
ADFGA
President (and VCDF), Vice-Adm Russ Shalders added that this was
the showcase event for the ADFGA.
It
provides a very credible medium on which to base selection for the
various representative matches that are held in the following year,
he said.
Vice-Adm
Shalders said the 2002 event took on more significance for representative
team selection, as there was a planned overseas tour to New Zealand
next year.
ADFGAs
first overseas tour was to New Zealand in 1987, so the 2003 tour
will bring back fond memories for some.
Of
the 20 tourists in 1987, only three remain serving permanently in
the ADF.
In
addition to Wg-Cmdr Swinbourne, they are now Lt-Col (then Lt) Shane
Amor, and WOFF (then FSgt) Steve McNamara (currently serving in
Rome).
As
tournament director, Sqn-Ldr Owens was quietly confident of another
successful and close-fought tournament.
Likely
contenders for the ADF title are Sgt Craig Corrigan (WA) and WO2
Cliff Smith (Sydney), and Flt-Lt Justin Mangan (Bandiana) and LAC
John Bell (RAAF Canberra).
The
2002 National Championship Information and Entry Package can be
obtained from the ADFGAs regional representatives.
