ENCOURAGING results at the first round of the Queensland Bream
Series with Matt Fraser, Leo OReilly and myself keen for
an attempt at round two.
The
competition was held at Caloundra on July 27-28, throughout the
Pumicestone Passage into northern Moreton Bay.
The
ongoing dry spell affected the water, which was particularly clear,
and made for difficult lure fishing conditions.
Competitors
new-found knowledge on soft plastics set this comp up to be interesting.
Competition
rules state that a maximum of five fish per angler can be weighed
in at the end of each session.
By
the end of the session my boater, Craig, weighed in four bream
for 1.64kg, and I weighed in five bream for 2.4kg.
We
used light six to seven foot spin rods, rated at 1-4kg to achieve
the long casts required.
Four-pound
Fireline spooled on small threadline reels was the main choice
among most of the competitors.
Fishermen
aboard Frasers boat were the only ones to catch a total
of 10 bream, which rated a mention of congratulations at the weigh-in.
OReilleys
intial boater had a non competition rules compliant boat
fortunately, competition organisers stepped in and provided a
compliant vessel minus an electric motor.
As
a result of both his performances in the Queensland Bream Series,
Matt has qualified to represent Queensland in the national final.
The
Queensland team will be competing against the NSW, VIC and WA
representatives at Taree in October.
The
competition will be tough, with the opposition boasting such names
as Steve Starling and Kaj Bush.
First
prize for the final is a $20,000 boat/motor/depth sounder package.
The result from the final will be published in a later edition.
